Good oral hygiene is a lot more than just having a pretty smile and perfectly pearly whites. Recent research suggests that mouth health is a mirror to what’s happening inside the body. A healthy mouth is usually a sign of good overall health, while poor oral health may be indicative of other health problems such as oral/facial pain, digestive issues, or problems with the heart and other major organs (systemic disease). No bueno.
Our job, aside from seeing the dentist regularly, is to brush and floss everyday (more than once a day, hopefully) to remove food debris & plaque, stimulate the gums, prevent cavities, gum disease and stanky breath. Some also like to use mouthwash as a topper in their routine as a way to wash out any loose particles, kill bacteria & germs, and to get that minty fresh feeling.
I’m a mouthwash user. But instead of using the store bought kind, I prefer to make my own with natural ingredients. I get my daily fill of chemicals and toxins in plenty of other ways!

The mouthwash I make has only 5 ingredients: aloe vera juice, alcohol-free witch hazel, 100% pure peppermint essential oil, baking soda and distilled water. Easy and economical.
Aloe is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial healer. It can help treat gum inflammation, canker sores, and cold sores.
Witch hazel can help to reduce pain and swelling of irritated or infected gums and can be used stop minor bleeding of the gums and mouth.
Peppermint oil has been shown to be more effective than chlorhexidine (mouthwash chemical) in preventing the development of biofilm that contributes to cavities. It also prevents yuck breath.
Baking soda works as a mechanical cleanser on the teeth and gums. It neutralizes the production of acid in the mouth and also acts as an antiseptic.
Tip: Try using your mouthwash before brushing your teeth, too. It will help loosen any debris thats stuck in your mouth and make it easier to remove them when brushing and flossing.
